Every November, people around the world come together to celebrate National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM). This annual event is dedicated to raising awareness, breaking down stigmas, and empowering individuals living with epilepsy. Organized by the Epilepsy Foundation, this year’s theme, “Share Your Purple Power,” focuses on celebrating the resilience, courage, and unwavering strength of epilepsy warriors, as well as the dedication of their families, caregivers, and advocates.

The goal of this year’s campaign is to create a united community by sharing personal stories, educating the public, and fostering greater understanding. Through these collective efforts, we can dismantle harmful myths about epilepsy, promote inclusivity, and empower individuals to live their lives with confidence and dignity.

This article dives into the significance of Epilepsy Awareness Month, explores the importance of sharing “purple power,” and highlights how organizations like Participant Assistive Products are championing the cause globally.

What Is Epilepsy, and Why Does Awareness Matter?

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects over 50 million people worldwide, making it one of the most common brain disorders globally. It is characterized by recurrent seizures, which occur due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These seizures can vary widely in type and severity—from brief, nearly unnoticeable episodes to prolonged and life-threatening events.

Living with epilepsy can affect every aspect of life. Individuals often deal with challenges such as:

• Physical health impacts, including injuries from seizures and side effects from medications.

• Emotional and mental health struggles, such as anxiety and depression, which often accompany the unpredictability of the condition.

• Educational and professional barriers, as misconceptions about epilepsy can lead to discrimination in schools and workplaces.

• Social stigma and isolation, fueled by a lack of understanding about the disorder.

These challenges underscore why raising awareness during Epilepsy Awareness Month is critical. Education helps break down misconceptions, create supportive environments, and pave the way for individuals with epilepsy to thrive.

The Power of Purple: A Symbol of Hope and Strength

Purple is the international color of epilepsy awareness. It symbolizes hope, strength, and unity among those affected by the condition. Wearing purple during Epilepsy Awareness Month is a simple yet powerful way to show solidarity and support for the epilepsy community.

This year’s theme, “Share Your Purple Power,” encourages people to go beyond wearing purple by actively engaging in awareness efforts. By sharing personal stories, participating in events, and spreading knowledge, individuals and organizations can amplify the voices of epilepsy warriors and create lasting change.

How to Share Your Purple Power

Here are some impactful ways to participate in Epilepsy Awareness Month:

1. Share Your Story: Whether you’re living with epilepsy, a caregiver, or an advocate, your story matters. Sharing your experiences can inspire others, build connections, and educate those who may not fully understand epilepsy.

2. Educate Your Community: Take the time to educate friends, family, and colleagues about epilepsy. Topics like seizure first aid, myths versus facts, and the importance of access to healthcare can be life-changing for those unfamiliar with the condition.

3. Get Involved in Events: Many epilepsy organizations host walks, fundraisers, webinars, and other events during November. Participating in these activities not only raises awareness but also provides funding for critical research and support services.

4. Leverage Social Media: Use platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to spread awareness. Post facts about epilepsy, share graphics, and use hashtags to reach a broader audience.

Combating Stigma and Misconceptions

One of the greatest barriers for people with epilepsy is the stigma attached to the condition. Misconceptions such as epilepsy being contagious or caused by supernatural forces persist in many cultures and societies. These false beliefs can lead to discrimination, exclusion, and fear, all of which prevent individuals from seeking help or fully participating in their communities.

Common Myths and the Truth About Epilepsy:

• Myth: People with epilepsy are less capable of achieving success in life.

Fact: With proper support and treatment, individuals with epilepsy can excel in school, careers, sports, and other areas.

• Myth: Epilepsy is a mental illness.

Fact: Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain, not a mental health disorder.

• Myth: People with epilepsy should be isolated during seizures.

Fact: Proper seizure first aid involves staying with the person, ensuring their safety, and providing reassurance until the seizure ends.

From our interest in less resourced settings we read an article by Kayode O. Osungbade, titled “Myths, misconceptions, and misunderstandings about epilepsy in a Nigerian rural community: implications for community health interventions.” Several cultural beliefs and systemic challenges contribute to the treatment gap for epilepsy in rural Nigeria.

Key Findings:

• Causes of Epilepsy: Many participants attributed epilepsy to witchcraft (81.4%), destiny (49.8%), brain disorders (12%), heredity (27.8%), and demonic possession (26.8%).

• Modes of Spread: Misconceptions included transmission through saliva (28.8%), sharing utensils (19.5%), and mocking a person with epilepsy (12.1%).

• Preferred Treatments: Traditional medicine was the primary choice for 80.5% of respondents. Common methods included herbal remedies (67.7%), spiritual exorcism (33.7%), charms (26.2%), and sacrificial offerings (24.1%).

• Barriers to Modern Treatment: Respondents cited the distance of health facilities (86.1%), lack of available health personnel (83%), and unavailability of epilepsy medications (79.6%) as key challenges.

The study highlights that cultural misconceptions, combined with inadequacies in healthcare infrastructure, significantly hinder effective epilepsy treatment. It also recommends empowering local health staff and fostering collaboration between traditional and modern healthcare systems to improve accessibility and address the treatment gap.

During Epilepsy Awareness Month, we have the opportunity to challenge these myths, promote empathy, and build a more inclusive society. This requires open conversations, targeted education, and collective advocacy.

Supporting Families, Caregivers, and Advocates

The impact of epilepsy extends beyond the individual—it affects families, caregivers, and advocates who provide essential support. Caregivers, in particular, often navigate complex roles, managing medical appointments, medications, and the emotional toll of caregiving.

Acknowledging the contributions of these unsung heroes is a vital part of Epilepsy Awareness Month. By providing resources, building support networks, and recognizing their efforts, we can ensure they feel empowered in their caregiving journeys.
