Properly adjusted wheel locks are essential for safety and everyday use. They help keep the wheelchair securely in place during transfers, seating adjustments, and when the chair is parked.
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to adjust the Cub wheel locks so they engage firmly and operate correctly.
Why Wheel Lock Adjustment Matters
Over time, normal use may cause the wheel locks to require readjustment. A properly adjusted wheel lock should stop the rear wheel securely without excessive force while providing a positive locking action.
Correct adjustment helps improve:
User and caregiver safety during transfers.
Stability while parked.
Reliable brake engagement.
Confidence during everyday use.
The Cub User Manual recommends checking the wheel locks regularly as part of routine maintenance, since loose wheel locks can lead to injury.
Wheel Lock Adjustment Overview
The adjustment demonstrated in the video follows these basic steps:
Loosen the bracket nut and both jam nuts so the brake arm can move freely.
Position the brake shoe approximately 4 mm from the tire. A spacer, such as a piece of thick cardboard, can be used to achieve a consistent gap before tightening the bracket nut.
Gradually tighten the top jam nut and test the wheel lock after every few turns. The correct adjustment is achieved when pressing the brake pedal locks the wheel firmly and produces a distinct "snap" as it engages.
Once the adjustment is correct, tighten the bottom jam nuts securely against each other to lock the setting in place.
Tips
Always test both wheel locks before returning the wheelchair to service. Both brakes should fully prevent the rear wheels from rotating when engaged.
Maintain the recommended brake shoe clearance. Keeping approximately a 4 mm gap between the tire and brake shoe before final adjustment helps ensure consistent braking performance.
Inspect the wheel locks as part of routine maintenance. The Cub User Manual recommends checking that the wheel locks stop the wheels completely during the daily safety check and keeping them properly tightened during monthly maintenance.
Readjust the wheel locks whenever wheel or tire components are replaced. Changes in tire wear or wheel installation may affect brake performance and require a new adjustment to maintain safe operation.
