How to Adjust the Cub Hip Guide Angle

Proper hip guide positioning plays a critical role in maintaining pelvic alignment, stability, and comfort. When the Cub wheelchair is reclined, the relationship between the seat cushion and the hip guides changes. If the hip guides are not adjusted to match the new seating angle, gaps can develop that reduce support and compromise positioning.

In this tutorial, we'll show you how to adjust the angle of the Cub Hip Guides so they maintain continuous contact with the user, even when the backrest is reclined.

Why Hip Guide Angle Matters

The Cub Hip Guides are designed to stabilize the pelvis while accommodating a wide range of clinical needs. Each support is independently adjustable in width, height, depth, and angle, allowing clinicians to create an individualized seating system for every user.

When the backrest is reclined—for example to approximately 120°—the original hip guide position may no longer follow the user's posture. This can create a gap between the lower edge of the hip guide and the seat cushion, reducing pelvic support and allowing unwanted movement.

Adjusting the hip guide angle restores continuous contact, helping maintain proper alignment and improving overall comfort.

Before You Begin

Before making any adjustments:

  • Recline the backrest to the angle prescribed for the user.

  • Inspect both hip guides.

  • Look for any gap between the bottom of the hip guide and the seat cushion.

  • If a gap is present, the hip guide angle should be adjusted.

Clinical Tip: Always perform hip guide adjustments with the wheelchair configured exactly as it will be used. The optimal angle depends on the user's prescribed seating position, not simply on the chair itself.

Step 1 – Prepare the Required Tool

Using the adjustment tool included with the Cub wheelchair, locate the screws securing the hip guide bracket.

Step 2 – Loosen the Hip Guide Bracket

Carefully loosen the bracket screws just enough to allow the hip guide assembly to move.

There is no need to completely remove the hardware—only loosen it enough so the bracket can be repositioned.

Step 3 – Adjust the Hip Guide Angle

Once the bracket is free to move, rotate the hip guide until its lower edge sits flush against the seat cushion.

The Cub hip guide pad has multiple mounting holes on its rear surface that allow clinicians to adjust:

  • Angle

  • Depth

  • Position

These multiple attachment points make it possible to fine-tune the support for different seating configurations and individual clinical requirements. The support pad incorporates a 5 × 4 mounting-hole array with 20 mm spacing, providing multiple depth options while also allowing the pad angle to be adjusted.

Step 4 – Secure the Adjustment

Once the desired position has been achieved:

  • Tighten all bracket screws firmly.

  • Verify that the hip guide no longer lifts away from the seat cushion.

  • Confirm that the guide remains stable without movement.

The bottom of the hip guide should now remain fully supported by the seat cushion, even with the backrest reclined.

Final Verification

Before returning the wheelchair to the user:

  • Check that both hip guides are equally secure.

  • Confirm there are no visible gaps between the guides and the seat cushion.

  • Verify that the pelvis is evenly supported on both sides.

  • Ensure all fasteners have been tightened before use.

Pro Tips

Configure the Chair Before Adjusting

Always complete recline, seat angle, and other major seating adjustments before setting the hip guide angle. This ensures the guides are aligned with the user's final seating posture.

Customize Each Side Independently

The left and right hip guides can be adjusted independently to accommodate asymmetrical positioning needs and individual pelvic presentations.

Recheck After Seating Changes

Whenever the seating configuration changes—such as recline angle, cushion modifications, or other postural support adjustments—inspect the hip guides again to ensure they continue providing continuous pelvic support.
