This year's World Occupational Therapy Day theme, "Occupational Therapy for All," emphasizes the need to make therapeutic services accessible and inclusive for everyone. It highlights the essential role occupational therapists play in empowering individuals of all ages and backgrounds to overcome daily challenges, thrive in their environments, and lead fulfilling lives. One person who embodies this mission is Dave Calver, a dedicated occupational therapist and the co-founder of Participant Assistive Products. Dave's career journey is as inspiring as it is impactful, reflecting both his resilience and commitment to improving accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges.
A Journey Defined by Resilience and Purpose

Dave Calver’s path to becoming an occupational therapist began under unique circumstances. Following a spinal cord injury, Dave experienced firsthand the physical and psychological barriers that individuals with mobility impairments face. This transformative experience inspired him to pursue a career in occupational therapy—a path that not only allowed him to build a fulfilling career but also empowered him to help others reclaim their independence and rebuild their lives. As an occupational therapist, Dave quickly developed a deep understanding of the daily struggles that people with disabilities face and recognized the value of creating tailored solutions to empower them.
Occupational therapy enabled Dave to merge his personal experience with professional expertise, giving him an intimate knowledge of the importance of empathy and adaptability in therapy. His own journey helped him appreciate the transformative impact of small changes, whether it's adapting a tool, modifying a routine, or designing a mobility aid. Driven by his passion for accessibility, Dave began working with individuals of all ages, helping them achieve greater independence in their daily lives.
Breaking Barriers Through Participant Assistive Products

Inspired by his work and his vision for inclusive solutions, Dave co-founded Participant Assistive Products, an organization dedicated to creating high-quality, affordable mobility aids for children. Participant’s mission centers on the idea that every child deserves the right to move, explore, and engage fully in their surroundings. With Dave’s expertise as an occupational therapist, Participant has developed products that prioritize user-centered design and adaptability, ensuring that each device caters to the unique needs of its user.
Dave’s work with Participant has been instrumental in bridging gaps in access to mobility aids, particularly in low-resource communities. His approach is grounded in the belief that access to mobility devices and assistive technology should not be a privilege but a right. Through Participant, Dave and his team have empowered children worldwide, enabling them to attend school, interact with their peers, and participate actively in their communities.
Occupational Therapy for All: A Vision of InclusionÂ

Dave’s journey and work with Participant align seamlessly with the theme of "Occupational Therapy for All." Occupational therapy is about enabling people to lead independent, satisfying lives. It’s about helping individuals reach their fullest potential despite physical, emotional, or environmental challenges. Dave embodies this ethos, demonstrating through his career and his company that occupational therapy can—and should—be accessible to everyone.
Occupational therapists play a crucial role in helping individuals adapt to their environments, regardless of their challenges or backgrounds. This inclusive approach acknowledges that everyone, from young children to the elderly, can benefit from therapeutic support to improve their daily lives. As the global community celebrates World Occupational Therapy Day, the stories of people like Dave Calver remind us of the profound impact that dedicated professionals can have on the world.
The Path Forward: Expanding Access to Therapy and Assistive Products
In a world where disability can often mean isolation or exclusion, Dave’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when individuals receive the support they need. His journey reflects the potential within occupational therapy to not only restore physical capabilities but also foster hope and self-worth. Occupational Therapy for All is more than a theme; it’s a call to action to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
When Dave is not working as an OT, you will find him headed to the water toting kayaks on top of his converted truck. He continues using his adventure guide skills by teaching and guiding adaptive kayaking. Dave’s not-for-profit organization, Society for Inclusion and Participation Global Adventures (SIP Global Adventure) is designed to provide kids and adults with disabilities adventures, education and whitewater kayaking instruction all over the globe. His passion demonstrates that exploration isn’t limited by physical constraints.

The work of Participant Assistive Products serves as an example for the entire field of occupational therapy, illustrating how the right tools and technologies can empower individuals and break down barriers. As Dave continues his mission, he inspires both the occupational therapy community and society at large to prioritize accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities.Â
