Occupational Therapy for All: Celebrating the Impact of Dave Calver

One person who embodies this mission is Dave Calver, a dedicated occupational therapist and the co-founder of Participant Assistive Products.  A Journey Defined by Resilience and Purpose

Dave Calver’s path to becoming an occupational therapist began under unique circumstances. Following a spinal cord injury, Dave experienced firsthand the physical and psychological barriers that individuals with mobility impairments face.  This transformative experience inspired him to pursue a career in occupational therapy—a path that not only allowed him to build a fulfilling career but also empowered him to help others reclaim their independence and rebuild their lives.  As an occupational therapist, Dave quickly developed a deep understanding of the daily struggles that people with disabilities face and recognized the value of creating tailored solutions to empower them.

Inspired by his work and his vision for inclusive solutions, Dave co-founded Participant Assistive Products, an organization dedicated to creating high-quality, affordable mobility aids for children. Participant’s mission centers on the idea that every child deserves the right to move, explore, and engage fully in their surroundings. With Dave’s expertise as an occupational therapist, Participant has developed products that prioritize user-centered design and adaptability, ensuring that each device caters to the unique needs of its user.

Dave’s work with Participant has been instrumental in bridging gaps in access to mobility aids, particularly in low-resource communities. His approach is grounded in the belief that access to mobility devices and assistive technology should not be a privilege but a right. Through Participant, Dave and his team have empowered children worldwide, enabling them to attend school, interact with their peers, and participate actively in their communities.

When Dave is not working as an OT, you will find him headed to the water toting kayaks on top of his converted truck. He continues using his adventure guide skills by teaching and guiding adaptive kayaking. Dave’s not-for-profit organization, Society for Inclusion and Participation Global Adventures (SIP Global Adventure) is designed to provide kids and adults with disabilities adventures, education and whitewater kayaking instruction all over the globe. His passion demonstrates that exploration isn’t limited by physical constraints.

The work of Participant Assistive Products serves as an example for the entire field of occupational therapy, illustrating how the right tools and technologies can empower individuals and break down barriers. As Dave continues his mission, he inspires both the occupational therapy community and society at large to prioritize accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities.
